Mitch and I had one of those unforgettable experiences at Stake conference last Sunday. It was the type of thing where we both just shook our heads and said, "that was just our luck".
Our Stake conference is always held at the Bountiful Conference Center. It's that gigantic dome building you see off the freeway by Woods Cross. This year our Stake Conference was at 2:00 pm. (Could they have chosen a worse time!) That is mid-nap for Ellie, and really you might as well cut off her ears if she misses her nap because the lady wont do a thing you say if she is tired. However, she will have enough energy to be a little stinker (Don't get me wrong, we love the little lady but naps are essential for our 2 year old).
We took our normal seats next to the stairs about half way down the dome. We like these seats because they are in the corner, they have a quick get a way if the kid needs to go to the bathroom etc. but just after the 'halftime' song, Ellie decided to get a little devious. She escaped from our back row isle and ran her finger along the back of our chairs. No need to panic yet... she's just testing her boundaries... Then she started walking faster, and before I knew it she was standing in the middle of conference center at the top of the long down hill slanted Isle that leads straight to the podium. Then she did it... the inevitable. She smiled her half way smile and took off down the slanted slope with her little legs going so fast she could barely keep up with them. And because I was on the outer isle edge I was the one who had to make the humiliating chase. Let me just paint the picture for you. A two year old goes flying down the isle as if escaping from prison. Chasing her is her 38 1/2 week pregnant mother who just happened to wear a bright YELLOW MuuMuu and Brown high heels running as if her life depended on it to make sure her two year old does not make it onto the stage. Just before the stairs to the stage and in front of Stake Presidency, I catch the little Turkey and take an immediate left out the doors and up the stairs (In which we only made it half way up because I was too winded). It was there that she sat in time out and I closed my eyes breathing heavily, trying not to cry in embarrassment at what my Stake just witnessed. Nobody should have to see a woman of my disproportion move like that!
As I returned a few minutes later, I walked back to our seats and plopped Ellie on Mitch's lap and said "you are on, I'm done". In which he replied, "no, I have to go". In my humiliated anger I replied, "like heck, you have no where to go!" "I have to go bare my testimony!" he replied. "you do not Mitch, I'm not kidding you need to entertain her." Then he stood up, walked the 400 meters to the front of the stage and took his place on the stand. I guess while I was catching my breath on the stairs the Stake President stood up and said, "We will now hear from our Stake Patriarch, and after him we would like to hear a testimony from President Dorius for laughing at his wife as she chased their daughter down the isle!" SWEET REVENGE!
The Lord Sure Works in Mysterious Ways! I felt like his punishment was just for laughing at his bright yellow sun beam running down the isle. Needless to say, Mitch delivered a great Testimony in Stake conference, I got my run in and we will now be tying a rope to our two year old at the next Stake Conference. jk :) It really was an unforgettable Stake Conference.
